Being Associate sponsor at this week’s inaugural TETRA Congress Americas in New York, I found the whole event to be exciting as vendors and end users came together to pioneer TETRA as a new technology to North America. Having been deployed in over 120 countries around the world since 1996, including many countries in South America, TETRA is the most prevalent Land Mobile Radio technology in the world and has been a long time coming to North America. Axell Wireless is the leading TETRA DAS (Distributed Antenna Systems) manufacturer in the world with over 50% market share so we’re certainly happy to see it grow in North America.
With the establishment of the North America TETRA Forum (of which we are a member) and the fact that the TCCA are running a TETRA Congress in the country, the necessary organizations are being established to promote and support this technology. It seems that the private LMR entities are most interested; industries such as utilities and transit, for example. And it makes sense because the interoperability required to be a TETRA vendor ensures sufficient competition to drive down costs and increase feature sets meaning these organizations can obtain a tremendously effective network and terminal devices at a much reduced cost.
There are some challenges when it comes to deploying TETRA too, and it is worth addressing these head-on if TETRA is a possibility in your network. When considering it within a DAS there have been concerns throughout the world about spurious emissions, noise on the macro network, and the ability to direct sufficient power to the desired channels in congested RF environments. As a result, much of the world has standardized on channelized, digital TETRA signal boosters. Having the patent for digital filtering, Axell naturally leads the way in this area. Axell also enables Automatic Level Control (ALC) per timeslot which is critical for managing power, coverage area, and issues like the Near/Far Effect. As you may know, each TETRA 25 kHz signal has four 6.25 kHz timeslots.
